Leadership crisis looms in ADC as Nafiu Bala declares self Interim National Chairman

A Gombe-born politician named Nafiu Bala announced himself as the African Democratic Congress’s (ADC) interim national chairman on Thursday, sparking a leadership crisis inside the opposition coalition-backed party.

David Mark, a former Senate President, is now in the role.

Following the opposition coalition’s adoption of the ADC as its platform, Mark was named interim national chairman.

Nafiu Bala, the ADC’s candidate for governor of Gombe State in the 2023 elections, stated that he is taking on the role of acting national chairman because he is the party’s legitimately elected National Deputy Chairman.

He made the statement at a news conference in Abuja, where he charged that certain people, whom he called “political hooligans,” were responsible for creating a crisis in ADC’s leadership.

Former party leaders, he charged, had abandoned their constitutional duties and turned over the party’s infrastructure to “powerful outsiders” who had no affiliation with the ADC.

In addition, Bala publicly urged INEC, the Independent National Electoral Commission, to respect the integrity of the ADC constitution and acknowledge the leadership transition immediately.
