The United Nations’ global fund for education in emergencies and protracted crises, Education Cannot Wait (ECW), has announced a $17.1 million catalytic grant to support education opportunities for children in Somalia. The grant will fund the Multi-Year Resilience Programme, operated by the Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA) in partnership with Save the Children, Concern Worldwide, and the Formal Education Network for Private Schools.

The program aims to improve holistic learning outcomes, including basic numeracy, literacy, and social-emotional learning, while strengthening the resilience of the education system. The focus will be on ensuring educational access for vulnerable children, including refugees, returnees, and other at-risk groups. With this funding, the program aims to reach 43,000 children with safe, quality educational opportunities

To date, ECW has invested $47.1 million in Somalia, assisting over 300,000 children and adolescents. ECW director Yasmine Sherif emphasized the importance of the investment, stating, “We will not allow Somalia to be another ‘forgotten crisis.’ More than half of Somalia’s school-aged children—4.5 million—are out of school today.”

Sherif added, “ECW is a pooled funding mechanism advancing joint programming. Our additional financial investment will thus enable all our partners in Somalia to jointly deliver continued quality education. Clearly, education is the best investment to empower crisis-affected communities to take the reins, steer their own destiny, and end dependency on aid.
