Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, has advocated for tougher laws targeting illegal drug peddlers and related offences as part of efforts to reduce substance abuse in the country.
He made this appeal during a visit from the Abia State Commander of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Mr. Joseph Owoputi, at his residence in Nvosi, Isiala Ngwa South Local Government Area.
The Governor emphasized the need to dismantle drug syndicates in order to disrupt the supply chain of illegal substances. He pointed out that with a majority of crimes linked to drug consumption, imposing stricter penalties could deter young people from engaging in drug-related activities.
“We just need to crack the drug cartel. So, if you crack the drug cartel, then the crime disappears.
“Unfortunately, the law is a bit lenient on the use of drugs. I didn’t know that until I was in one of the security council meetings.
“They said that whenever you apprehend somebody using drugs, you counsel and rehabilitate the person. That’s not enough punishment”, Otti said.
Expressing concern over the growing number of youths many of whom should be in school falling victim to substance abuse, Otti proposed that the National Assembly should enact a firm law to address drug issues from the root.
He also pledged his administration’s continued collaboration with the agency in the fight against drug abuse.
As part of his support, the Governor approved the provision of two new Hilux vehicles for the agency and instructed that the state’s government should recover and repair all abandoned NDLEA vehicles.
