The Niger State Liquor Licensing Board has shut down a total of11 unauthorized beer parlors in Mokwa, Lavun, and Edati local government areas for failure to adhere to standards controlling sales and consumption of alcohol in the state.
Under the direction of the Director General of the Board, Barr. Yahaya Halidu, a monitoring team discovered that the beer parlors were located in locations that were considered inappropriate for the sale of alcohol and were operating without the required licenses.
A motel close to a mosque in Mokwa, Mokwa local government, was found to be sheltering prostitutes during the operation, causing disturbances to worshippers in the area.
The 50-room hotel’s owner, however, stated that he would be willing to sell the property in light of this development in order to expand the mosque or an Islamic school.
Barr. Yahaya Halidu cautioned the public that the authorities may seize properties rented to sex workers or illicit vendors.
He added, “The closures were initiated due to the beer parlors’ failure to comply with the Board’s regulations concerning the sale and consumption of alcohol in the state.
“The owners of the closed beer parlors have been warned that any attempt to reopen them will result in severe penalties, as specified in the state’s liquor licensing laws.”
