Photos taken inside a home where a guy was reportedly held captive by his stepmother for 20 years have been made public by police in Waterbury, Connecticut, USA.

The unidentified man told police that he was trapped in a small room that was fastened with plywood and a lock after he fled the house in February by lighting a fire using printer paper and hand sanitizer.

He claims that he received very little food and drink for years.

More than 100 images that the WFSB has acquired show just how terrible the circumstances were for the man, who was 32 years old, 5’9″, and weighed about 70 pounds. According to the police, he appeared “very malnourished.”

The interior of the property is plainly in horrible shape, with some rooms visibly scorched from a fire and others untidy and dilapidated from neglect, according to many of the pictures WFSB acquired from Waterbury police.

The entire house has mold and broken floorboards, and some of the carpeted areas are filthy and full of rubbish. It looked as though some of the house’s ceiling was broken, exposing timbers. Plywood is used to cover several of the windows.

One image shows a printer among other strange items strewn around a bedroom with a bright pink wall. Another image of a bathroom displays cardboard boxes and glass on the floor, along with damaged wall insulation.

After escaping her burning home, the man’s stepmother, Kimberly Sullivan, has been taken into custody by the police for abducting and starving her stepson for decades.

She was freed on a $300,000 bond after entering a not guilty plea to charges of kidnapping and felony assault last week.

After previously claiming that unsupported claims were removed five years after the police visited the home for a welfare check, the Waterbury Department of Children and Families recently announced that it had discovered old documents from 2005 that named Kimberly Sullivan and her stepson, according to WFSB.

Before his stepmother pulled him out of school, the guy informed police that he had twice met with DCF in the fourth grade to voice his displeasure with his home situation.

He informed police at the moment, his stepmother told him to notify the department that everything was all right. Nothing unusual was found, according to the welfare check police.

The man was perhaps 14 or 15 years old when he last left the property with his father. He informed police that the imprisonment became increasingly restrictive after his father passed away in 2024.

According to the sworn testimony, he “essentially, was locked in his room between 22 and 24 hours a day,” so those excursions lasted “only about 1 minute a day.”

The man told authorities that he discovered a lighter in his late father’s jacket a year ago. At that point, he began formulating an escape strategy.

“There’s a lot of physical therapy that he’ll have to go through,” Waterbury Police Chief Fred Spagnolo said. “There’s a lot of healing that he’ll have to go through mentally.”

After being horrified by the cruelty they claim to have been looking into, Waterbury police officers started a collection to purchase the man clothing, books, and other things that might help him feel more at ease.

“We’re committed to supporting him in every way possible as he begins to heal from this unimaginable trauma,” stated Waterbury Mayor Paul K. Pernerewski in reference to the recently released guy.
