NBC warns TV anchors against bullying guests, compromising neutrality
The Nigerian government has issued a warning to television broadcasters and presenters over violations of the national broadcasting code.
The National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) released the directive in a notice made available to broadcasters on Friday.
The commission stated that the warning follows a reported increase in unprofessional conduct across Nigerian news broadcasting platforms.
The regulator informed broadcasters, including Arise Television, Channels Television, and others, that it would implement strict and uncompromising enforcement of all provisions of the Nigeria Broadcasting Code, particularly those concerning fairness, balance, accuracy, hate speech, incitement, and respect for constitutional institutions.
NBC cautioned broadcasters to maintain professionalism when covering political matters, communal conflicts, and war-related issues.
“The broadcaster shall exhibit professionalism in handling the transmission, especially sensitive issues such as politics, communal conflicts, and wars.
Specifically, it warned that sanctions would be imposed on anchors or presenters found to have presented personal opinions as facts, intimidated or bullied guests, denied opposing views a fair hearing, compromised neutrality, or acted in a manner that disrespects human dignity.
