Nigeria has emerged as a leader in local rice production in Africa, producing 8.7 million tonnes of rice, the highest volume of production last year. According to IndexBox’s new report entitled “Africa – Rice – Market Analysis, Forecast, Size, Trends and Insights”, Madagascar and Egypt followed with 5 million tonnes of production each, totalling a combined 45% share of the continent’s total production.

The report noted that Tanzania, Guinea, Mali, Côte d’Ivoire, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Senegal, and Sierra Leone lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 40% of total production. From 2013 to 2024, Senegal attained the most notable rate of growth in terms of production, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of +11.6%

In terms of consumption, Nigeria, Madagascar, and Egypt had the highest volumes of rice consumption last year, together comprising 34% of total consumption. The report forecast that driven by increasing demand for rice in Africa, the market is expected to continue an upward consumption trend over the next decade, expanding with an anticipated CAGR of +1.3% for the period from 2024 to 2035.

The market value is forecast to increase with an anticipated CAGR of +1.8% for the period from 2024 to 2035, which is projected to bring the market value to $42 billion (in nominal wholesale prices) by the end of 2035. The report provides valuable insights into the African rice market, highlighting trends, forecasts, and key statistics that can inform business decisions and policy-making.
