The Osun State Government has stated that it will obtain an official copy of the U.S. court ruling that sentenced Oba Joseph Oloyede, the Apetumodu of Ipetumodu, to prison over COVID-19 relief fund fraud before deciding on any action regarding his position as a traditional ruler.

This was disclosed in a statement issued on Wednesday by the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Mr. Dosu Babatunde.

Babatunde emphasized that the government will not make decisions based on unconfirmed reports circulating on social media.

“While it may be true that the monarch has been convicted and jailed, there is no official record before us,” Babatunde said.

“We will ensure that the Certified True Copy of the judgment is obtained. After carefully studying it, the government will then decide the appropriate steps to take. We cannot rely on Facebook posts and online stories to justify a matter of this magnitude,” he added.

Oba Oloyede, 62, who is a dual citizen of Nigeria and the U.S., received a 56-month prison sentence on Tuesday from U.S. District Judge Christopher A. Boyko. In addition to the prison term, he was given a three-year supervised release and ordered to pay restitution amounting to $4,408,543.38.

According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Ohio, he also forfeited his Medina, Ohio home acquired through the fraud proceeds alongside $96,006.89 linked to the scheme.

Authorities found that he led a conspiracy that exploited emergency loan programs designed to assist struggling small businesses during the COVID-19 pandemic.
