Several filling stations in Birnin Kebbi have reportedly suspended petrol sales following a price reduction announced by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC), leaving motorists and commuters struggling to obtain fuel.

A visit to parts of the Kebbi State capital revealed that many filling stations had stopped dispensing petrol, barely a day after the NNPC announced a ₦66 reduction in the product’s pump price.

The development was attributed to decisions by some independent petroleum marketers to halt sales, further limiting the availability of petrol across the city.

The shortage also disrupted traffic and transportation activities, as some motorists reportedly avoided the roads amid the high cost of fuel and difficulties securing supplies.

A manager at one of the affected filling stations, who requested anonymity, disclosed that although petrol was available at the facility, the owner had instructed him to suspend sales.

He explained that the product had been purchased at a higher rate, meaning that selling it at the newly announced lower price could result in financial losses for the business.

A civil servant, Aminu Muhammed, said the situation had affected workers’ daily routines, with some unable to go to work while commercial drivers parked their vehicles because of the high prices and limited supply.

Operators of kabu-kabu, a form of informal commercial transportation, also voiced their dissatisfaction over the development.

They alleged that some filling stations that continued selling petrol charged as much as ₦1,500 per litre, despite motorists spending several hours waiting in lengthy queues.

Consequently, residents continued to experience difficulties purchasing petrol despite the announced reduction in its price.
