The Assistant Inspector-General of Police for Zone 17, which covers Ondo and Ekiti States, Mr. Ajani Omolabi, has stated that the police now maintain a more respectful and cooperative relationship with the public.

In a conversation with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday in Akure, Omolabi explained that this shift in approach has fostered trust among citizens, which in turn has improved the flow of information crucial for crime prevention and control across the zone.

“The police have become civil rather than being bossy. We are now civil to the people we are working with. We come to their level, engage them and we understand one another,” he said.

He further explained that this more approachable and transparent style of policing has made it easier for officers to receive useful intelligence from residents. “It also helps us to get information easily from them. And also, the robust way of bringing ourselves to the community level, the open door policy, it has also helped us,” he added.

According to the AIG, officers across both commands have participated in a series of training sessions, including seminars and lectures, aimed at instilling values of openness, integrity, and professionalism.

“I have held seminars, lectures with them. And this is always what I advocate, that we should be closer to the community in our work place and on the issue of giving information to the police.”

He shared that he has personally engaged with numerous communities, urging them to feel free to approach not only the Divisional Police Officers (DPOs), but also senior officers, including the Commissioner of Police and even the AIG himself.

“I have also had meetings with many communities, telling them that they should go directly to the Divisional Police Officer, DPO, or even come to the Commissioner of Police or AIG, go and give your information.”

He emphasized that the force takes confidentiality seriously and ensures that informants are protected. “We are not far away from the people we are working with and whosoever that is giving us information, we make sure we protect such person,” he said.

Omolabi also called on the public to see the police not as adversaries, but as allies in maintaining law and order. He highlighted that officers are in service to the people and should be treated as partners in community safety.

He noted that his office remains open and accessible for anyone wishing to file a complaint or express a concern.

In addition, the AIG pointed out that police personnel are being encouraged to pursue education and training to enhance their effectiveness in law enforcement and in handling legal proceedings.

He concluded by reaffirming the force’s firm stance against misconduct, stressing that indiscipline among officers would not be tolerated.
