The Presidency has faulted recent remarks by Peter Obi calling on President Bola Tinubu to resign from office, with Special Adviser on Media and Public Communications, Sunday Dare, describing the position as contrary to the principles of Nigeria’s constitutional democracy.
In a statement shared on his official social media platforms, Dare stated that Obi’s position does not align with the country’s presidential system of government, which guarantees fixed terms for elected leaders.
The presidential spokesman explained that Nigeria does not operate a parliamentary arrangement where a government can be removed through a vote of no confidence.
“Nigeria is a constitutional presidential democracy. Presidents are elected for fixed terms and leave office through elections, constitutional processes, incapacity or the expiration of their mandate,” Dare stated.
Obi had earlier called on President Tinubu to step down, citing economic difficulties, insecurity and what he considered unmet campaign promises.
Responding to the demand, Dare argued that the former Anambra State governor’s comments demonstrated what he described as a poor understanding of the constitutional structure regulating the office of the president.
“It raises a troubling question: if a man seeking the presidency cannot demonstrate respect for the constitutional foundations of the office, why should Nigerians trust him with that office?” Dare said.
The presidential aide also accused Obi of concentrating largely on criticism of government policies without recognising areas where the administration believes progress has been made.
According to him, effective leadership involves not only pointing out challenges but also presenting realistic alternatives and workable solutions.
“A serious national leader acknowledges both challenges and progress. A serious leader offers alternatives,” he stated.
Dare further alleged that Obi’s recent public engagements have focused mainly on drawing attention to the country’s difficulties.
He maintained that occupying the office of president demands maturity, balance and a firm commitment to constitutional principles.
The statement stressed that political disagreements and criticisms should continue to be pursued within the bounds of Nigeria’s democratic institutions and constitutional processes.
