Rivers crisis: Fubara takes final decision on Tinubu peace deal

Governor of Rivers State Siminalayi Fubara has announced that he has agreed to the terms of the peace agreement mediated by President Bola Tinubu to end the state’s protracted political crisis.

Following a confrontation between Fubara and his predecessor, Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike, the crisis ensued.

During the Christmas holiday in 2023, the governor stated in a statewide broadcast that he has accepted the peace treaty.

He pointed out that the state’s political conflict has been able to be resolved in part because of the president’s intervention.

Fubara said he had spent considerable time to review the wording of the agreement and that it is not as severe as people believe, although he recognized that the directives had caused conflicting emotions around the state.

He said: “As a principal participant in the entire saga, I have taken some time to study the terms therein and have come to the conclusion that the Peace Pact is not as bad as it is being portrayed by those genuinely opposed to it.

“It is certainly not a death sentence. It offers some way towards lasting peace and stability in our dear state.

“Accordingly, I reaffirm my acceptance of the Presidential Peace Proclamation and my commitment to implementing both the spirit and letters of the declaration in such a way and manner that will restore political stability to our dear state without compromising the collective interest of our people and our cherished and shared democratic values.”

He reiterated that there was no price too high for peace and observed that both sides to the problem had taken decisive action in putting the proclamation into practice.
