The state’s local government elections have been rescheduled for August 30, 2025 by the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission, RSIEC.
Dr. Michael Ekpali Odey, the state electoral chairman, made this announcement during his open address on Monday at the release of the updated schedule for the Rivers State LG election.
According to ZINGTIE, the local government elections were originally planned for August 9, 2025, under the direction of Retired Justice Adolphus Enebeli, the former chairman of the RSIEC, before he and other commission board members were disbanded.
Retired Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas, the state’s sole administrator, ordered their dissolution after President Bola Ahmed Tinubu appointed him and proclaimed a state of emergency in Rivers State.
President Tinubu also suspended all members of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Siminalayi Fubara, the governor of Rivers State, and his deputy, Professor Ngozi Nma Odu, as part of the emergency measures.
All of the registered political parties’ leaders, traditional leaders, security forces, religious organizations, the media, professional associations, civil society organizations, non-governmental organizations, community-based organizations, and voters are in attendance at the conference.
