The Oyo State Wing of the Nigeria Union of Teachers, NUT, has commenced an indefinite strike effective from Monday, June 1, 2026, until further notice.

The directive was issued by the State NUT Chairman, Comrade Hassan Fatai, in a statement released on Monday.

Fatai explained that the industrial action is in protest against the continued captivity of abducted teachers and pupils in the state.

According to the union, the prolonged detention of the victims has generated fear and anxiety among teachers, discouraged parents from sending their children to school, and increased tension in communities across the state.

The development comes after President Bola Tinubu on Sunday directed the recruitment of 1,000 forest guards to facilitate the rescue of the abducted teachers and students.

ZINGTIE reports that Tinubu approved the recruitment of at least 1,000 forest guards alongside the deployment of a special rescue operation to the state.

However, the NUT stated that the strike action is intended to draw government attention to the urgent need to intensify efforts toward securing the safe release of the abductees without further delay.

The union urged all teachers across the state to fully comply with the directive, remain peaceful, and stay safe in their respective homes throughout the duration of the strike.

“The action is intended to draw the attention of government and security agencies to the urgent need to intensify efforts towards the safe rescue of our colleagues and the pupils still in captivity,” the statement said.
