On Saturday, September 6, 2025, Mpumalanga police had a major victory when they captured five individuals, ages 19 to 30, on the N4 close to the Kanyamazane turn-off. The arrests are connected to many violent robberies that occurred in Nkomazi earlier that day.

Our report states that the first incident happened at approximately 3:30 when armed individuals broke into a church in Ngwenyeni, close to Komatipoort, fired rounds, hurting a 14-year-old child who is currently in stable condition. A later heist at a pub in Madadeni is thought to have been committed by the same group. Following intelligence-led operations, police stopped the suspects’ car and found two illegal guns, several cell phones, and other suspected stolen goods.

In a related case, authorities reported that a 22-year-old suspect was shot and killed on Friday night after allegedly robbing worshippers at a mosque in Kwaggafontein. Three members of the congregation are being treated in the hospital after suffering injuries.

The Provincial Commissioner of Mpumalanga, Lieutenant General Semakaleng Daphney Manamela, commended the officers’ prompt action and underlined the police’s dedication to defending communities against violent crime.

“The arrests and recovery of firearms show that we are closing in on criminal networks,” she said.

On Monday, September 8, 2025, the five detained suspects are expected to appear at Kanyamazane Magistrate’s Court. They will be charged with robbery-related offenses, unlicensed firearm possession, and possession of stolen items. The public is urged by authorities to exercise caution and report any suspicious behavior, particularly in the vicinity of places of worship and entertainment locations.
