Don’t come for campaigns – ‘Marginalised’ Osun community warns political parties

Residents of Ikoyi town in Isokan Local Government Area of Osun State have cautioned political parties against carrying out campaign activities in the community, citing alleged marginalisation and inadequate development.

The community, represented by its youth leaders, specifically pointed to the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Accord Party, accusing both parties of neglecting the area in terms of political inclusion and infrastructure development.

Speaking with journalists over the weekend, the Youth Leader, Orolade Abiodun, who also holds a traditional title as a palace chief, stated that the town has been excluded from elective positions since the creation of Osun State.

He warned that unless immediate action is taken to address these concerns, politicians from the affected parties may not be permitted to campaign within the community.

“We may not welcome them to canvass for votes if our demands are not met,” Abiodun said.

He called on prominent political figures, including Bisi Akande, Gboyega Oyetola, and Governor Ademola Adeleke, to ensure that Ikoyi is given the opportunity to present candidates in upcoming elections.

Abiodun noted that Ikoyi has never produced a candidate for the House of Representatives, even though other towns within the same federal constituency have occupied the position multiple times.

He urged the APC to allocate its ticket to the town, emphasizing the importance of fairness and inclusiveness in the political process.

Regarding the state assembly seat, he explained that there has been a long-standing rotational agreement between Irewole and Isokan local government areas since 1991.

“In our constituency, the arrangement has always been that representation rotates every four years between the two local governments to maintain balance,” he said.

He expressed concern over reports suggesting that the existing arrangement might be changed, alleging that there are plans to retain incumbents who have defected to the Accord Party.

“The current lawmaker is from Irewole, and it is now the turn of Isokan. We appeal to Accord stakeholders to return the ticket to Isokan in the interest of equity,” Abiodun added.
