Transport unions decry removal of speed breakers on highway

The National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) and the Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN) have voiced strong disapproval over the removal of speed bumps by contractors along the Oko-Olowo highway in Ilorin, the capital of Kwara State.

The frequently used roadway has recently witnessed multiple deadly accidents at the Oko-Olowo junction, largely attributed to unchecked speeding by large trucks.

In a statement released on Saturday and jointly signed by Kwara NURTW Chairman, Alhaji Abdulrasak Ariwoola, and RTEAN’s Alhaji Abdulrahman Onikijipa, both unions expressed deep concern.

They criticized the actions of a contractor hired by the Federal Government, who allegedly dismantled the speed bumps that had been put in place by the Kwara State Government to curb speeding on the route.

“Since the speed breakers were removed by a contractor working on the road, we are seriously concerned about the safety of commuters along Oko-Olowo axis.

“We fear that this action may trigger a new wave of accidents and avoidable loss of lives on the road,” the statement said.

The unions called on the Federal Government to take immediate steps to reinstall the speed bumps and implement further safety measures to safeguard the lives of road users on the busy highway.
