After refusing to smile during her wedding until the groom, his family, and friends “bought” her mouth with money, the bride sparked outrage on social media.

In the widely shared TikTok video, the bride is shown sitting composedly during an announcement and declaring that she won’t smile until the groom and his family have given her enough money.

In accordance with cultural custom, the bride stayed silent in the face of multiple attempts by the groom’s family and friends, who assembled to provide money.

Additional information on the practice is given in the video’s caption, which reads: “BIBIFE in Kalabari literally means ‘buying of mouth.’ The groom must ‘buy’ his bride’s mouth before she can eat in his house. He must also buy the mouths of his in-laws to allow them to eat whenever they visit.”

“According to tradition, the bride is not meant to smile from the beginning of the ceremony until the groom has successfully bought her mouth.”
