A member of the House of Representatives, Fred Agbedi, has said that the possible participation of former President Goodluck Jonathan in the 2027 presidential election could alter Nigeria’s political atmosphere significantly.

Agbedi, who represents Sagbama/Ekeremor Federal Constituency of Bayelsa State in the House of Representatives, also disclosed that the former Nigerian leader plans to contest again for the presidency under the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party.

Speaking during an interview on Politics Today on Wednesday, Agbedi was asked about the effect Jonathan’s entry into the race could have in an election already expected to feature prominent politicians such as Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, and Omoyele Sowore against President Bola Tinubu in the January 2027 poll.

“It carries significant weight; it will disrupt the entire political environment,” Agbedi remarked.

The Bayelsa politician maintained that Jonathan is now better prepared than ever to lead the country again, insisting that he remains the most suitable person to pilot the affairs of Nigeria at this period.

“He is more qualified for the position. A serious nation within a democratic framework seeks out the most capable individuals, regardless of their location, to respond to the urgent needs of the country by saying, ‘We require a competent, capable, tested, and trusted leader to steer our nation.’ This is the approach of a serious country,” he said.

Agbedi further stated that after eight years under former President Muhammadu Buhari and three years under Tinubu, many Nigerians are looking forward to another four years of Jonathan to stabilise the country.

According to him, the situation in the country has become increasingly difficult under the administration of the All Progressives Congress, with many citizens believing Jonathan has the capacity to rescue the nation.

Agbedi’s comments came after a court judgment cleared the former president to participate in the 2027 presidential election.

On Tuesday, Justice Peter Lifu of the Federal High Court in Abuja dismissed a suit filed by lawyer Johnmary Jideobi seeking to stop Jonathan from contesting the 2027 presidential election.

While delivering judgment, Justice Lifu also awarded a N20 million fine against Jideobi in favour of the former president.

The court additionally imposed a N1 million fine against the plaintiff in favour of the Attorney-General of the Federation, AGF.

Justice Lifu ruled that Jideobi lacked the legal standing to institute the case because he failed to show that he suffered any injury from Jonathan’s alleged intention to contest the election.

The judge further noted that both the Federal High Court in Yenagoa and the Court of Appeal had earlier ruled that Jonathan was qualified to contest, adding that he was bound by the appellate court’s decision.

Justice Lifu subsequently described the suit as “an abuse of the court process.”
