A widows’ rights advocate in Ogun State, Babatunde Adeyemo, has appealed to governments at all levels to establish a special agency or dedicated department to tackle the increasing socio-economic difficulties confronting widows and their dependent children.

Adeyemo made the appeal on Tuesday in Abeokuta as part of activities marking this year’s International Widows Day.

He stated that creating a government-supported institution focused solely on widows would provide structured interventions and sustainable assistance for countless women who have lost their spouses and are left with the responsibility of caring for their children without adequate support.

According to him, federal, state and local governments should establish a specialised body responsible for addressing the concerns of widows through programmes that promote economic empowerment, healthcare access, education for their children, legal assistance and social welfare support.

He observed that many widows continue to face hardship, discrimination and neglect despite their important contributions to society.

Adeyemo explained that his appeal became necessary as the world commemorates International Widows Day every June 23, a United Nations-recognised observance created to draw attention to the poverty, discrimination and injustice experienced by widows and their dependents.

He maintained that targeted government policies are needed to improve the living conditions of widows and restore their dignity.

The advocate further called on governments, private organisations and compassionate Nigerians to work together in establishing enduring support systems that would safeguard widows and secure a better future for their dependent children.
