Social media commentator Martins Vincent Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan, has alleged that he received threats following his criticism of political leaders in Northern Nigeria and his comments on governance issues affecting the region.
The activist made the claim in a video shared on his verified social media page.
According to him, his recent remarks regarding development challenges in Northern Nigeria triggered negative reactions from some individuals, with one person allegedly threatening to kill him should he visit the region.
“I see some northern/arewa influencers are asking for my head because of the video I made yesterday. Some are in my DMs dropping threat,” he said.
Despite the alleged threats, VeryDarkMan stated that he remains unafraid, insisting that he could visit any part of Northern Nigeria without encountering any problems.
The social media activist stressed that his criticisms were directed at political office holders and not the people of the region.
He argued that elected leaders should bear responsibility for challenges such as poverty, insecurity and limited economic opportunities confronting many communities in Northern Nigeria.
“The northern part of Nigeria is holding Nigeria back because the politicians made it so. I am not blaming the people, I am blaming the government for doing that to its people,” he stated.
VeryDarkMan described Northerners as hardworking and sincere people, maintaining that the region’s challenges stem largely from failures in governance.
He also criticised certain empowerment initiatives, referring to a programme in Kano State where plates were reportedly distributed to beneficiaries.
“I wonder why the Kano State governor was doing an empowerment programme and he was sharing plates. That’s not empowerment, that’s empowering poverty,” he said.
The activist further alleged that insecurity has affected agricultural activities in several parts of the North and urged critics to pay closer attention to the problems facing communities in the region.
According to him, those directing their anger at him should instead channel their concerns toward political leaders who are responsible for governance and policy decisions.
“You’re having a fight with VDM when you should be fighting with the politicians,” he said.
