Meta has introduced new monetization tools on WhatsApp, designed to help creators, businesses, and organizations expand their reach and generate revenue through the app’s updates tab. The tech giant announced three key features: Channel Subscriptions, Promoted Channels, and Adverts in Status.

According to Meta, “We’ve been talking for years about how to build a business on WhatsApp in a way that doesn’t interrupt personal chats. We believe the updates tab is the right place to introduce that.”
With Channel Subscriptions, users can pay a monthly fee for exclusive updates from their favorite channels. Promoted Channels will allow WhatsApp to recommend channels based on user interests, providing creators and businesses with a paid tool to enhance visibility. Adverts in Status will enable businesses to place targeted promotions within the status feature.
Meta emphasized that the new features prioritize user privacy, maintaining end-to-end encryption for personal messages, calls, and group chats. “To show adverts in status or channels you might care about, we’ll use limited information such as your country or city, language, the channels you follow, and how you engage with the ads you see,” it stated.
For users who have linked WhatsApp to Accounts Centre, Meta will also use their ad preferences and data from across Meta accounts. However, Meta assured that it “will never sell or share your phone number with advertisers.” The features will be rolled out gradually over the coming months, with more information available through official WhatsApp Business resources.
