Wike’s Camp Fires Back After Amaechi’s Latest Remarks Spark Political Debate

The Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Nyesom Wike, Lere Olayinka, has mocked African Democratic Congress, ADC, vice-presidential candidate, Rotimi Amaechi, accusing him of suddenly positioning himself as a defender of the Catholic Church because of politics.

In a post shared on his X handle, Olayinka alleged that Amaechi and other opposition figures now view every national issue as an opportunity to attract support ahead of the 2027 general elections.

He wrote: “Politics has now turned Rotimi Amaechi into an emergency defender of the Catholic Church.

“These clowns see everything as an opportunity for votes. Waiting for Pitobi too.

“Wike Helped him in 2007 and 2011. Wike defeated him in 2015, 2019, and 2023. Who’s he?”

Amaechi had, during an interview on Channels Television on Tuesday, accused President Bola Tinubu of disrespecting the Catholic Church over comments made by the Presidency concerning the Archbishop Emeritus of Abuja, John Cardinal Onaiyekan.

The exchange followed President Tinubu’s meeting with the Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria, led by Onaiyekan, at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

During the meeting, the Catholic bishops reportedly expressed concerns over the current state of the country.

According to Onaiyekan, President Tinubu rejected the assessment presented by the bishops regarding the nation’s situation.

The cleric’s remarks after the meeting subsequently triggered strong reactions and criticism from the Presidency.
