Staff at a Buddhist temple on the outskirts of Bangkok were astonished to learn that a woman thought to be dead was still alive only seconds before her scheduled cremation, according to Pairat Soodthoop, General Manager of the Wat Rat Prakhong Tham temple.

During the ceremonial preparations, Soodthoop told the Associated Press that he was “startled” to hear a faint knocking coming from inside the coffin.

When he asked for the coffin to be opened right away, he discovered that the 65-year-old woman was tapping weakly on the wooden interior and slowly opening her eyelids. He remarked, “She must have been knocking for quite some time.”

The woman’s brother had previously told the temple that she had been declared deceased by the local authorities.

But according to Mr. Soodthoop, the family failed to provide a formal death certificate, and he was outlining how to get one when the knocking started.

The abbot of the temple ordered workers to take the woman to the hospital as soon as it was evident that she was still alive. She did not have cardiac or respiratory arrest, but doctors later confirmed that she had undergone severe hypoglycemia, a deadly drop in blood sugar.

The brother claims that his sister had been bedridden for two years and that she seemed to cease breathing on Saturday when her illness got worse. For what they thought would be her cremation, the family had traveled almost 500 kilometers from Phitsanulok province to Bangkok.

The incident was one of the most shocking near-mistakes at a Thai temple, according to local sources, and the crew was thankful that the slight knock was detected in time.
