World Cup: Argentina Coach Speaks on Messi, Martinez’s Argentina Future

Argentina head coach, Lionel Scaloni, has reacted to growing speculation over the international future of Lionel Messi and Emiliano Martinez following the team’s defeat to Spain in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final.

The Albiceleste came within touching distance of successfully defending their World Cup crown after reaching consecutive finals.

However, their hopes were dashed after suffering a narrow 1-0 defeat to a dominant Spanish side.

Following the loss, reports began to emerge suggesting that 39-year-old Lionel Messi and first-choice goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez could be considering retirement from international football.

Speaking to TyC Sports after returning to Argentina, Scaloni was asked about the speculation and responded, stating (via GOAL):

“After a tournament like this, with normal occurrences, I believe one begins to reconsider certain aspects.”

“We are here until December. The most significant aspect of this situation is how events unfolded. The public understood that the team gave their all, and what happens next… the most important thing is always Argentina. Regardless of whether I remain in my position or not, the most important thing is this unity, this bond,” the coach added.

Messi and Martinez have played central roles in Argentina’s recent success on the international stage.

At the just-concluded World Cup, Messi registered seven goals and three assists, while Martinez delivered several decisive saves throughout the tournament.
