Brazilian nun Inah Canabarro Lucas, who held the title of the oldest living person in the world, has died at the age of 116, only a few months after being recognized with the title.

Her passing was confirmed on Wednesday by both her religious order and organizations that track records in human longevity.

The Teresian Sisters, based in Porto Alegre, Brazil where Lucas spent her final days expressed heartfelt appreciation for her unwavering commitment and spiritual service throughout her life.

Born on June 8, 1908, Lucas became the world’s oldest living person in January, following the death of Tomiko Itooka, a Japanese woman who also lived to be 116.

She embraced religious life in 1934, joining the sisterhood at the age of 26 and dedicating herself fully to a life of faith.

Her extraordinary age and devotion attracted admiration from both experts in human longevity and religious institutions.

According to LongeviQuest, Lucas was considered a frail infant at birth, and many doubted she would survive her early years.

Nonetheless, she defied expectations and lived more than a century, often crediting her enduring life to her deep spiritual beliefs.

“He is the secret of life. He is the secret of everything,” she once said, in reference to God.

In honor of her 110th birthday in 2018, she received a special blessing from Pope Francis, who himself passed away last Monday at the age of 88.

While Lucas personally believed she was born on May 27, 1908, researchers have verified her official birth date as June 8, 1908.

“Her documented birth date according to records is June 8, 1908,” stated Robert Young, director at the Gerontological Research Group, back in January.

LongeviQuest reports that Lucas is now recognized as the 15th-oldest person in recorded history, and the second-oldest nun ever, following Lucile Randon of France, who lived to 118 and died in 2023.

With Lucas’s death, Ethel Caterham, a 115-year-old woman from Surrey, England, is now officially recognized as the oldest living person, according to LongeviQuest’s database.
