Seyi Makinde, the governor of Oyo State, claims that Nigerians and the ruling All Progressives Congress, or APC, will face off in the 2027 presidential election rather than the APC and his party, the main opposition Peoples Democratic Party, or PDP.
Makinde made this statement on Tuesday’s episode of “Politics Today” on Channels Television.
“The 2027 election won’t be PDP versus APC; it would be Nigerians versus APC. Mark my word on that,” he said.
The next election will be a litmus test for the Bola Tinubu administration, the governor said, criticizing the APC government for the faltering economy and growing security threats in the nation.
He emphasized that his party, the PDP, is still the hope of the average person and that it will not repeat the error that cost it the 2023 presidential election.
Makinde claimed his party committed a serious error by giving the presidential ticket, the position of national chairman, and the position of director general of the presidential campaign to individuals from the northern region exclusively, citing the last poll as a lesson.
The Oyo governor reaffirmed that the PDP’s loss in the poll was the result of a self-inflicted blow to the party caused by the exclusion of Southerners from the three main seats.
According to the ZINGTIE, Iyorchia Ayu of the North Central was the PDP’s national chairman in the run-up to the most recent election, Atiku Abubakar of the North East was the party’s flag bearer, and Atiku’s campaign director general was Aminu Tambuwal of the North West.
“If the three main influential positions to take us to the election were occupied by the North East, the North Central, and the North West, how do we sell that position all around the country,” Makinde argued.
He added that if Atiku had chosen Nyesom Wike, the governor of Rivers State at the time, as his running mate, the PDP ticket would have been more powerful.
