The National Human Rights Commission, NHRC, has urged relevant authorities to arrest and prosecute Islamic cleric, Sheikh Yahaya Jingir, over comments that have sparked widespread criticism.

The demand followed remarks allegedly made by the cleric during an event in Kano, where he defended the Muslim-Muslim ticket ahead of the 2027 elections and was said to have encouraged Muslims to maintain political superiority over Christians.

In a statement, the Executive Secretary of the NHRC, Tony Ojukwu, SAN, characterized the comments as “hate speech and incitement to religious hatred and potential violence,” warning that such utterances could worsen divisions and endanger peaceful coexistence.

The commission appealed to security agencies, including the Nigeria Police Force and the Department of State Services, DSS, to take action against the cleric, emphasizing that no individual should be exempt from accountability because of position or political connections.

“We cannot afford to look away. If we fail to speak and act now, we embolden both Christian and Muslim clerics and other influential persons to make worse statements in the coming months. That path leads only to crisis,” the NHRC stated.

The commission further advised religious leaders, political actors and traditional institutions to refrain from making provocative statements.

It also called on Nigerians to resist identity-driven politics as preparations intensify for the 2027 general elections.
