A third-year undergraduate student at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur was found dead in his hostel room on Sunday, January 12, 2025.
The 21-year-old student, who was pursuing electrical engineering, was discovered by his parents, who had visited him on campus.
According to sources, the parents had grown concerned when their son failed to respond to their calls and knocks on the door. Upon forcing open the door, they found his lifeless body. The student had been experiencing health issues, and his parents had recently requested a room change due to academic concerns.
“His parents come frequently because he suffers from some health ailment. Recently, his parents requested to shift him from a three-person room to a single room, citing academic issues,” said an anonymous source.
The authorities have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the student’s death, which is yet to be confirmed as a suicide or homicide. The police have collected the student’s body for post-mortem examination and are analyzing his call logs as part of the investigation.
The IIT Kharagpur administration has expressed it’s condolences, describing the student as “academically gifted.” The institute is cooperating fully with the authorities to determine the cause of the student’s death.
