According to reports, police in the state’s Ekpoma, Esan West Local Government Area, shot and killed an 18-year-old kid named Chinedu Abimbor.

According to ZINGTIE, the terrible event took place at a police checkpoint in the town on Wednesday, March 12, 2025.

However, it was reported that the police had taken the deceased’s younger brother into custody.

Youths and the deceased’s family protested the incident, calling for justice for the dead adolescent and the prosecution of the perpetrator.

When police officers flagged down the victim, who was operating a Mercedes-Benz, the driver refused to stop, according to an eyewitness who spoke on condition of anonymity.

He claimed that when the young man refused to stop, one of the agents became enraged and opened fire on the car, killing the victim in the process.

He further stated that the police promptly caught and detained the victim’s brother, who was inside the car when the incident occurred.

“Angry youths took to the streets of Ekpoma on Thursday to demand justice for the slain 18-year-old as a result of this development,” he said.

The demonstrators called for the victim’s brother’s immediate release from detention and also made a visit at the palace of HRH Anthony Ehizogie Abumere II, the traditional ruler of Ekpoma.

One of the demonstrators’ representatives, Lucky Adaba, stated, “We went to the police station to inquire about what could have led to the killing, but the police teargassed us and started shooting.

“The police have formed the habit of harassing young men driving cars in Ekpoma.”

To find out what truly transpired, the Edo State Police Command has mandated a thorough inquiry into the incident.

Chinedu Abimbor was killed in an incident involving a joint operation team of security officers and the occupants of an unregistered Mercedes-Benz, according to a statement released by Moses Yamu, the Command’s Public Relations Officer.

In her address to reporters on Friday, Yamu clarified that the three patrol teams involved in the event had been ordered to immediately cease operations by Betty Otimenyin, the Commissioner of Police in charge of the Command.

According to him, the Commissioner “called for calm from the general public, with the assurance that justice will be served in the end” and expressed sympathy to the deceased’s family and friends.
