According to Microsoft Vice Chair and President Brad Smith, “We are continuing that tradition with community partners at the University of Washington and Fred Hutch, among others.” He further emphasised the importance of collaboration, stating, “Working together to identify opportunities for our AI for Good Lab to leverage the power of AI and data science to create new opportunities for our community to grow together.”
This philanthropic effort is part of Microsoft’s broader commitment to the community. In 2024, Microsoft and its employees contributed $88 million to nearly 5,000 organisations across the state. The company’s long-standing partnership with the University of Washington has seen over $165 million in contributions, supporting initiatives such as the Global Innovation Exchange and the Centre for Research and Education on Accessible Technology and Experiences.
The University of Washington has praised Microsoft’s commitment, with President Ana Mari Cauce saying, “Their advocacy for higher education is transformative, and our students and state are seeing the benefits of that advocacy every day.” Ed Lazowska, Professor and the Bill & Melinda Gates Chair Emeritus at the University of Washington’s Paul G. Allen School of Computer Science & Engineering, added, “Together, Microsoft and the UW are working to lift up the entire region”.
