According to various publications, a German couple in Spain was detained after their three children were imprisoned within what authorities referred to as a “house of horrors.”

According to translated reports by local media outlets El Comercio, El Mundo, and Spanish newspaper ABC, the Oviedo Police Department reported that it had rescued three children from a home in the Oviedo neighborhood of Spain on Monday, April 28, more than three years after they had been locked inside after the last wave of the COVID-19 pandemic.

According to authorities, the parents of the children, a 53-year-old German man and his 48-year-old American wife who also held a German passport, were taken into custody and accused with domestic violence, child desertion, and habitual psychological abuse.

According to the publication and El Mundo, the children were twins who were eight years old and a ten-year-old.

According to El Comercio, a neighbor complained on April 14 about youngsters living in the house who hadn’t been going to school, which prompted an investigation into the family. This sparked an inquiry by Oviedo police, who collected testimonials from other neighbors and records of the residence.

“Initially, there was nothing that drew particular attention,” According to the Italian publication Il Messaggero, Oviedo Police Chief Javier Lozano stated during a press conference.

But when they dug more into their investigation, things took a different turn.

According to the outlet, police discovered that the family had let out the house in October 2021 and that the only name listed on the property was the father’s.

According to El Comcercio and El Mundo, neighbors reported to authorities that they had not seen the family leave the house since December 2021, and officers saw the father only exit to pick up mail and grocery delivery.

The father allegedly “agreed” to allow officers to enter the house when they arrived on April 28. Officers who went to the home said that they saw the parents place up to three masks on the youngsters before letting them in. Because her children were “very sick,” the mother advised authorities to “be careful.”

Officers entered the house and discovered it was cluttered with trash, numerous masks and medications, and other objects that they believed “a clearly unsanitary situation that could put the health and safety of the minors at risk.”

Lozano reportedly labeled the residence a “house of horrors” during the news conference, while ABC said that the children have also been living around feces since 2021.

Police also learned that the youngsters slept in cribs and defaced monsters and dolls were also located in their rooms. The authorities observed that the youngsters were “dirty” from being left inside the house, but they did not seem to be ill.

“The children were in terrible shape. It was absolutely outrageous, Not malnourished, because they were fed. But they were also dirty… [and] completely cut off from reality, and not just because they didn’t go to school. When we took them out of the house, into the garden, where they wouldn’t even go outside, they saw a snail and went crazy, freaked out.” one agent told El Mundo.

Following a medical evaluation at the National Human Rights Center, the Ministry of Welfare took custody of the three children and placed them in a juvenile facility.

As of Wednesday, April 30, ABC reported that their parents were being detained without bail in pretrial detention.

“We’ve all been affected by Covid syndrome and what the pandemic has brought, and we can speculate about what led a family to live locked up for so long,” Lozano said during the press conference, according to the outlets.
