Former Arsenal star Ian Wright took a subtle jab at Mikel Arteta’s men following the club’s women’s team clinching the Women’s UEFA Champions League title over the weekend.
Wright remarked that the success of Arsenal’s women prevented the North London Premier League club from facing ’embarrassment’ after their Champions League victory.
A second-half strike from Stina Blackstenius secured a 1-0 win over Barcelona at the Estádio José Alvalade in Lisbon, Portugal, allowing Arsenal to lift the trophy on Saturday.
This achievement contrasts with Arteta’s team, who finished the season without any silverware, making the women’s Champions League title the only major trophy the club claimed this campaign.
When asked what the latest trophy means for the Gunners as a club, Wright told TNT Sports: “It has saved the club.
“The embarrassment of not getting anything this season when we played so well with the men.
“The ladies have saved the club. We have got something to celebrate.”
“Of course they need a parade,” Wright added.
