Joel Gabbuza, a former cabinet minister and longtime member of parliament for Binga South, is in the hospital recuperating from severe injuries he suffered in an alleged axe attack connected to a possible love triangle.
According to reports, the tragedy happened late on Friday, June 7, 2025.
A guy who suspected Gabbuza of having an affair with his wife attacked him, according to those acquainted with the situation.
Although authorities have not yet released an official statement, it is thought that the violence was motivated by personal grievances. Investigations are still underway, and unverified reports indicate the attacker left the area.
False reports of Gabbuza’s death spread extensively in the wake of the incident. His family has, however, attested to his survival and response to treatment.
“He is receiving treatment at Hwange Colliery Hospital. His condition has improved from last night; he is now able to speak,” Gabbuza’s son told CITE in a brief telephone interview.
He also mentioned that plans were on to move the former MP to Bulawayo’s Mpilo Hospital for additional medical treatment.
Gabbuza has been in politics for more than 20 years. He represented Binga as an MP after being elected to Parliament for the first time in 2000 with the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC). He served as the representative for Binga South until his recall in October 2023, following modifications to the electoral boundaries in 2008.
Gabbuza was the Minister of Water Resources and Development for Zimbabwe during the 2009–2013 Government of National Unity. When Oppah Muchinguri-Kashiri was named head of the reorganized Ministry of Water and Climate, he resigned from his position.
As investigations continue, further information on the incident and Gabbuza’s condition is anticipated.
