A guy allegedly tried to abduct a two-month-old baby on Wednesday, causing tension among residents of Delta State’s Ughelli North Local Government Area. The infant was saved thanks to the quick action of watchful neighbors, and the culprit was taken into custody and turned over to the authorities.
According to reports, the suspect, who went by Lucky, broke into a bedroom where Eric Oghenevwede Oghenekparobo, the infant, was asleep. When Mrs. Oke Oghenekparobo, the baby’s mother, saw the stranger taking her child outside, she sounded the alarm.
Mrs. Oghenekparobo, 28, described her experience with tears in her eyes: “I saw a strange man walking out of our house with my son. I didn’t recognize him. I shouted, and he immediately dropped the baby and jumped the fence. But neighbours chased and caught him.”
Witnesses attested to the community’s quick response. According to one resident: “He tried to deny it, claiming someone else took the baby. But a youth recognized him, and we held him until others arrived.”
According to reports, the suspect boasted that he would be released soon after arriving at the police station and showed no remorse.
“He said nothing would happen to him and that the police would release him quickly,” said another resident.
Lucky defended his innocence by stating: “I came to the area to visit my friend who is a bricklayer. I have children of my own. I don’t know why I’m being accused.”
The prompt arrival of police officers from the Ughelli Area Command prevented the suspect from being lynched. Investigations are still on, and he is presently in police custody.
