Detectives have arrested 17-year-old Lizz Njeri Mwangi in connection with the horrific death of a three-year-old kid in Mchanganyiko, Kiamaina ward, Nakuru county, Kenya.
Along with her mother and other family members, the youngster attended church on Sunday, June 22, 2025.
While the church ceremony was going on, little Margaret Wanjiru would go outside to play, and her mother would return a short while later to check on her.
“When I went outside, I asked her brother where the child was, but she was nowhere to be seen,” her mother, Regina, told journalists.
“While looking for her in the church compound, the mother was informed that her daughter had been spotted outside the church premises, lying on the ground.
“I went and found her lying on the ground, and she was unconscious. We rushed her to the hospital, and she was pronounced d3ad upon arrival.”
Investigations immediately began, with the authorities reviewing CCTV footage from the surrounding homes to retrace the small girl’s last moments. Mwangi was the last individual seen leaving the church grounds with the child Wanjiru.
Mwangi took the young girl to a secluded area of the neighborhood and strangled her to death.
“She was captured by the secret cameras installed in the area’s streetlightscommitting the cold-blooded murder. The CCTV shows that the girl used the same scarf that I had dressed Wanjiru with,” she said.
The victim’s family was shocked by her strange responses when the authorities asked her why she did it.
“When asked why she did it, she said that she hated my daughter since joining our church,” the victim’s mother added.
According to Wanjiru’s father, the girl allegedly blamed a “spirit” that she claimed to have possessed her for her crime.
“She had said that she had been possessed by a spirit which directed her to do the crime,” he said.
The suspect was taken into custody by detectives at her home in Judea Village, Menengai Sub-Location, Kiamaina Ward, according to a statement released by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) on Monday.
Officers found the piece of fabric used to carry out the horrible deed and the clothing the suspect was wearing when the crime was committed, as seen on CCTV, when the suspect was taken into custody.
