A longtime associate of the party’s National Chairman, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, has exited the ruling party and joined the opposition group in Kano.

Mustapha Hamza Buhari Bakwana, a prominent grassroots organizer and former political adviser to Ganduje during his governorship, officially declared his membership with the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) on Wednesday.

His defection also marks his resignation from his role as Senior Legislative Aide to the Deputy Senate President, Barau Jibril.

Addressing his supporters in Kano, he expressed disappointment over how he and others were treated in the party.

Standing before his loyal supporters in Kano, said, “We gave everything to the APC — time, loyalty, sweat. But what did we get in return? Silence, neglect and betrayal. Enough is enough,” he said.

“We’ve chosen to pitch our tent with Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, a man who doesn’t forget his people. He understands the game of politics and plays it with honor.”

Previously regarded as one of Ganduje’s key political operatives in the North West, Bakwana’s decision to leave could hint at widening internal divisions, particularly as the 2027 general elections approach.
