Garba Shehu, a former assistant to former President Muhammadu Buhari, has spoken out about the belief that his principal supported opposition candidate Alhaji Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) against Bola Tinubu of his party, the All Progressives Congress (APC), in the 2023 election.
Shehu claimed that Buhari encouraged and helped Tinubu win the election in defiance of this notion.
As you may remember, Buhari urged nearly all of the party’s candidates—roughly 25 in total—to buy the nomination form during the polls.
Rumor had it that he wanted Goodluck Jonathan, the previous president, to take over. Additionally, there were rumors that he favored Chibuike Amaechi, the former minister of transportation, over Tinubu.
When asked about the belief that Buhari supported Atiku in opposition to Tinubu, Shehu said Channels Television, “I must have had a dream. It didn’t happen. I sat with President Tinubu after his victory.
“He told me that President Buhari allowed him to win in a free and fair election. Don’t mind people.
“When people are seeking favours, ingratiating themselves to leaders, they’ll say all manner of things. You expected him to tell people not to run against Tinubu…?”
