The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has criticized President Bola Tinubu, accusing him of using the funeral of former President Muhammadu Buhari as an opportunity to improve his public image.
In a statement released on Friday and signed by Bolaji Abdullahi, the party’s Interim National Publicity Secretary, the ADC alleged that Tinubu is attempting to gain political mileage from Buhari’s passing.
The party described the tribute delivered during the Federal Executive Council meeting, as well as the attendance of Buhari’s son, Yusuf, as a deliberate public relations effort by what it called an unpopular administration.
According to the ADC, the Tinubu-led government had previously placed blame on Buhari for Nigeria’s economic difficulties. However, following the former president’s death, the government is now trying to shift its tone in an attempt to regain support particularly in the North and among Buhari’s supporters.
“Grief is not a campaign strategy,” ADC said in parts of the statement.
It added: “Nevertheless, we are confident that Nigerians can see through their grand deceit.
“No public relations stunt can save a government that has behaved in the last two years like an army of occupation.”
