Janet Mwihaki, mother of three, lives with wounds that remind her every day of the monster she used to call her husband. She tells a startling and tragic tale of how the man who had once pledged her love twisted her life into a nightmare and then left her free.
On the day of her parents’ divorce, Janet’s life was forever altered. After leaving school in Class Eight, she moved in with her aunt and began working in a small hotel. She met a charming man there who assured her that she would live in paradise.
She moved in with him after only three months of dating. At first, everything was going well. Three children were a blessing for them. But after her last child was born, everything was different.
Her husband started to openly cheat, even inviting other women into their house. In front of them, he beat her. Broken and humiliated, Janet fled with her children and made an effort to start over.
He didn’t let her sleep, though. He followed her around, pleaded with her to come back, and became aggressive when she didn’t. He once pursued her while brandishing a knife. He discovered her again after she ran away and moved to a another place.
Then came the day that made all the difference. This man poured gasoline on Janet, struck a match, and set her on fire in the midst of the town during the day.
Although there was a rush to assist, the damage had already been done. Her face was completely burned. She fought for her life in the hospital for two years.
Her own family turned against her when she was eventually released. In embarrassment, they concealed her. She was weak, wounded, and desolate when her pastor intervened and assisted her in renting a modest home where she currently resides with her kids.
The man who did this to her has not been taken into custody as of yet. While Janet, who is unemployed and scarred, is fighting for her life, he continues to live freely.
She is now pleading with generous Nigerians for assistance in raising funds to launch a small business. Her face is the reason why employers won’t hire her.
