Nasir El-Rufai, the former governor of Kaduna State, was kicked out of the Social Democratic Party (SDP).

SDP also banned El-Rufai for 30 years and announced his expulsion from the party.

According to the SDP’s National Working Committee (NWC), the action was consistent with the party’s ideology, manifesto, principles, and practices as well as the Federal Republic of Nigeria’s Constitution and the Electoral Act, which both address a political party’s exclusive right to choose its own members.

Araba Rufus Aiyenigba, the party’s spokesperson, issued a statement cautioning members against hanging around with El-Rufai and people who don’t share its values.

Parts of the statement read: “El-Rufai is hereby banished and banned from applying for membership, identifying with the name, insignia, logo, symbol, mark, or any activities, organs, agencies, and institutions of the SDP or donating to, supporting, contributing to, or participating in any affairs of the SDP for a period of 30 years effective from today.”

As you may remember, El-Rufai left the All Progressives Congress, APC, to join the SDP.

But El-Rufai is also a major player in the opposition alliance, which, in preparation for the 2027 election, just made the African Democratic Congress, ADC, its platform.
