The Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) has raised concerns that President Tinubu’s government is neglecting Northern Nigeria in terms of federal funding and infrastructure, despite the region’s strong backing in the 2023 presidential election.

During a public engagement event hosted by the Sir Ahmadu Bello Memorial Foundation in Kaduna, the chairman of ACF’s board of trustees, Bashir M. Dalhatu, expressed disappointment over what he described as the North’s exclusion from important national policies. He noted that the region was instrumental in the president’s victory, contributing over 64% of the total votes cast in his favor.

Dalhatu referenced data from the Federal Ministry of Works, which indicated a striking imbalance in road funding: while the South West was allocated N1.394 trillion, the North East received only N24 billion. He criticized the continued abandonment of vital Northern infrastructure projects such as the Mambilla Hydroelectric Dam and the Baro Inland Port.

He also voiced frustration over the agricultural sector receiving under 5% of the national budget, despite the North’s central role in the country’s food supply. Dalhatu urged the government to declare a state of emergency in the energy sector to drive economic progress in the region.

These remarks follow earlier criticism from 2023 presidential hopeful Rabiu Kwankwaso, who made similar accusations of regional bias. However, the presidency countered Kwankwaso’s claims by outlining a number of ongoing development efforts in Northern states.

Babachir Lawal also echoed the sentiment of marginalization. In contrast, governors from Kaduna and Gombe states defended the administration, assuring the public that President Tinubu’s campaign pledges are being put into action.
