Chinedu Ekeke, the chairman of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) Abia State chapter, has provided an explanation for why funds from Federation accounts have been diverted to the Joint Account Allocation Committee (JAAC) rather than the local government regions.

He claims that the federal government is still debating how to respond to the Supreme Court’s ruling on the nation’s local governments’ financial autonomy.

In response to claims made by an opposition party member that Governor Alex Otti was embezzling money intended for rural community development, Ekeke made this statement on Friday at Government House in Umuahia.

Speaking on behalf of other Abia council chairmen, Ekeke said that the state government was not depriving Abia LGAs of funding for projects.

“On the Supreme Court judgement, the local governments are funded from the JAAC accounts because the funds go to the JAAC accounts. They don’t come to the local governments straight.

“The Federal government is probably trying to look for a way to handle that”, Ekeke said.
