The Ohanaeze Youth Council, OYC has sounded the alarm about the All Progressive Congress, APC’s N30m fees for expression of interest forms for the Ebonyi local government election, cautioning that this could result in future looting of LGA funds.
On Tuesday, the National President of OYC, Igboayaka O. Igboayaka, responded to the development by alleging that the process could exclude youths and individuals of integrity from the race.
Igboayaka called on Governor Francis Nwifuru to guarantee an equitable environment and open-door approach for all candidates in the forthcoming local government and councillorship elections.
He insisted that the nomination fees for Chairmanship and Councillorship be reduced to N150,000 and N50,000 respectively, cautioning that individuals who pay excessive fees might be more likely to misappropriate LGA funds after taking office.
“Reducing the Chairmanship and Councillors nomination fees to make it accessible to Ebonyi youths will foster healthy competition, which enhances credibility and competence.
“Paying such an exorbitant amount to secure a local government chairmanship position clearly indicates that young individuals who desire to serve as local government executive chairmen may be inclined to embezzle LGA funds if they are elected” Igboayaka said.
He issued a further warning about what he termed a calculated conspiracy against the youth of Ebonyi, as well as any actions that would weaken the economic and political advancement of the state.
