Youths in Abia and other South-East States have been urged by the Nigerian Army to respond to a national call by enlisting in the Nigerian Army to serve the country.

During the first edition of an awareness campaign organized by the department of Civil-Military Affairs, Nigerian Army for youths, traditional rulers, and other civil society groups, the call was made in Umuahia on Thursday.

Maj Gen Gold Chibuisi (Rtd), the guest speaker at the event, delivered a lecture encouraging South-East youths to embrace career opportunities in the Army in fields such as medicine, law, and engineering rather than avoiding military service.

He minimized the concerns regarding the profiling of Igbo soldiers and rejected the claims that junior soldiers from specific regions were routinely chosen to engage in battles on perilous front lines.

Gen. Chibuisi assured the youths of the South-East that they would not be denied promotion and welfare, and urged parents to permit their children to join the force.

Maj. Gen Chukwunedum Abraham (Rtd) also spoke, noting that the number of applicants from Imo State in the last Army recruitment in Nigeria was just 671, while Ebonyi State had 428 applicants. He expressed dismay at how low these numbers were in comparison to those from other geo-political zones.

Maj. Gen. Musa Awwal Etsu-Ndagi, the Chief of Civil-Military Affairs in the Nigerian Army, stated in his summary that the purpose of the program was to raise awareness among young people and opinion leaders about opportunities in the Nigerian Army and to clarify any misunderstandings about the force.

During his address, Alex Otti, the Governor of Abia State, emphasized his plea for Abia youths to join the Nigerian Army. He stated that the State should not be listed among those with the lowest figures for Army and other military enrollments.

He voiced concern over the low number of applications on Army recruitment forms that arrived in Abia State over the past few years, but he guaranteed that his administration would leverage the inaugural awareness campaign to alter this situation.
