Former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Mr. Peter Obi, has expressed confidence in his ability to gain support from northern Nigeria ahead of the 2027 elections, stating that no other candidate can rival his plans for the region.
Speaking on Prime Time on Arise Television on Monday, Obi shared his vision to transform the North, which he described as Nigeria’s greatest asset.
“Nobody can do what I intend to do in the North. We will change the North. Our greatest asset as a country is in the North. We can make more money from agriculture than we make from oil,” he stated.
The former governor of Anambra State also emphasized the need to strengthen democratic institutions, urging the government to support opposition parties.
According to him, a thriving opposition is crucial for effective governance and accountability.
“The government should protect the opposition. In fact, they should make opposition stronger and make it work,” Obi added.
“We need leaders who will unite us as a country. Religion and tribe should not define our future,” he further stated.
Obi called for a secure and stable Nigeria, where citizens can engage in development-focused discussions.
“We need a secure Nigeria where we can discuss issues that will help us build a better future,” he added.
When asked about the role of prominent figures like Nasir El-Rufai and Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso in securing northern support, Obi acknowledged the importance of collaboration but rejected the idea that victory depends on a few individuals.
“I will work with them so they can support the process, but Nigeria is bigger than individuals,” Obi said.
He stressed that meaningful engagement with the North should focus on tackling poverty, insecurity, and underdevelopment.
“If we want to secure the North, we must invest in agriculture, reduce poverty, and improve education and healthcare,” he explained.
Obi also highlighted the economic potential of the region, stating that agriculture could generate more revenue for Nigeria than oil if properly harnessed.
“We can make more money from agriculture than we currently make from oil, but we must start investing now,” Obi emphasized.
Drawing from his international experience, Obi mentioned that he has studied development models from other countries and believes Nigeria can adopt similar strategies.
“I have visited several countries and seen what works. We can replicate those successes here,” he said.
However, Obi stressed that security remains the foundation for any meaningful progress, especially in northern Nigeria.
“You cannot achieve development without first ensuring security,” he remarked.
Obi’s comments come amidst ongoing political realignments and discussions about coalition-building as the 2027 elections approach. There is growing attention on how candidates can garner nationwide support in a country as diverse as Nigeria.
