The Edo State Government has directed the temporary shutdown of three public secondary schools located in Akoko-Edo Local Government Area.

The affected institutions are Ososo Grammar School, Ososo Comprehensive High School, and Makeke Secondary School.

The decision was announced by the State Ministry of Education in a circular dated June 9, 2026, which was made available to journalists in Benin City.

According to the ministry, the action followed a security alert issued by the Edo State Command of the Department of State Services (DSS) concerning a suspected plot involving the mass abduction of students in the Edo North Senatorial District.

The circular, signed by Enodolomwanyi Otamere on behalf of the Permanent Secretary, was addressed to the principals of the affected schools.

Despite the closure, the ministry stated that students currently sitting for the ongoing West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) would still be permitted to write their examinations.

It explained that adequate security arrangements would be put in place to ensure the safety of the candidates during the examination period.

The ministry added that security agencies, alongside community stakeholders, would provide the necessary supervision throughout the exercise.

According to the circular, intelligence reports and security advisories received from relevant agencies indicated credible threats to the safety of students, staff, and school communities within parts of Akoko-Edo Local Government Area.

“Consequently, and in line with the Government’s commitment to the protection of lives and property, approval has been granted for the temporary closure of the affected schools with immediate effect

“All academic and non-academic activities in the affected schools are hereby suspended with immediate effect and shall remain so until further notice from the Ministry.

“However, candidates currently participating in the ongoing West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) shall be allowed access to sit for their examinations under strict security arrangements and supervision as may be provided by the relevant security agencies and community stakeholders”, it added.

The ministry also instructed the principals to ensure that students are safely released to their parents and guardians in an orderly manner.

School administrators were further directed to secure all facilities and properties throughout the period of the closure.

They were also advised to maintain regular communication with the Ministry of Education, the Chief Inspector of Education, and relevant security agencies.

In addition, the principals were urged to strictly comply with any further directives issued by the state government.

Meanwhile, the Edo State Government appealed to parents, guardians, and residents of the affected communities to remain calm and cooperate with security authorities.

The government assured the public that efforts were being intensified to safeguard lives and property while working towards the restoration of normal academic activities as soon as possible.
