Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo is set to lead his side into their 2026 FIFA World Cup opener against DR Congo on Wednesday, with added pressure following Lionel Messi’s latest heroics at the tournament.
Messi scored a remarkable hat-trick to inspire Argentina to a 3-0 victory over Algeria in their opening match, helping the defending champions begin their title defence in style.
The Argentine forward’s performance marked his first-ever World Cup hat-trick and also saw him surpass Ronaldo as the oldest player to achieve the feat.
Ronaldo previously scored a hat-trick against Spain in 2018 at the age of 33 years and 122 days.
Now aged 41, Ronaldo will step onto the pitch against DR Congo determined to guide Portugal to a strong start in the competition.
The Al Nassr forward will also be aiming to score in what could be his fifth appearance at the World Cup, further extending his legacy on the global stage.
