Portugal head coach Roberto Martinez has confirmed that defender Ruben Dias is not fit to feature in their opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup against DR Congo on Wednesday evening.
Dias picked up an injury in the final days leading up to Portugal’s World Cup opener against the African side.
The Manchester City centre-back had taken part in Portugal’s final two pre-tournament warm-up games against Chile and Nigeria.
Speaking during his pre-match press conference, Martinez stated that the defender will not be risked due to his fitness condition.
“He is not at 100 percent, and it is important not to take risks.
“He is not fit for the game. He is working well, but it is important to think about the period when Ruben will be at 100 percent,” Martinez said.
The Portugal coach further stressed that the focus is on ensuring the player returns to full fitness before being reintroduced into action.
Portugal will now proceed into their World Cup opener without the services of the experienced defender.
