The internal crisis within the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, took a fresh turn on Wednesday as two separate governorship candidates for the 2027 Benue State election received Certificates of Return from rival factions of the party.
Former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Chief Michael Aondoakaa, SAN, was presented with his Certificate of Return at the PDP National Secretariat, Wadata Plaza, Abuja, after emerging as the governorship candidate of the faction aligned with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.
Aondoakaa attended the event alongside his running mate, Dr Oyije Ochaekiti Ogbenjuwa, as well as several party leaders and stakeholders from Benue State.
Speaking shortly after receiving the certificate, the former minister expressed appreciation to the party leadership and members for the confidence placed in him.
He also assured supporters that he would work towards reconciling members of the party and lead the PDP to victory in the 2027 governorship election in Benue State.
In a separate development, another faction of the party under the leadership of former Minister of Special Duties, Kabiru Tanimu Turaki (SAN), also issued a Certificate of Return to Dr Emmanuel Agbo, the Director-General of the PDP Governors’ Forum, after declaring him the winner of its governorship primary.
While the Wike-backed faction conducted its presentation at the PDP National Secretariat in Abuja, the exact location where the Turaki-led faction carried out its own ceremony could not be independently confirmed at the time this report was filed.
The issuance of parallel Certificates of Return represents the latest development in the lingering leadership dispute that has split the PDP into opposing camps, with both groups claiming legitimacy and control of the party structure.
With Aondoakaa and Agbo now separately recognised by their respective factions, attention has shifted to the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, which is yet to release the official list of candidates for the 2027 Benue State governorship election.
